Mr. Zappa perform "Black Napkins" from "Zoot Allures" album (he plays in the studio with the show band). Please note that the quality of this video isn't that great. This is a real little Zappa gem. Magic! somebody comments below on it being like Santana, sorry my friend, but you've still got some way to go. Check out Zappa's The Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression on Shut Up. Thanks for posting!

I don't know if underrated is right. Maybe more appropriate would be under appreciated and not as well known as he probably should be. He didn't do all the setting his guitar on fire or running around the stage in spandex with big titted women in music videos and stuff, and his music was so unconventional so he just wasn't as huge as some acts. But he was technically as good or better than all of them, and I think the people who do know Zappa, tend to know that.

Yet virtually ALL of Van Halen's most recognizable and most commercially successful recordings featured David Lee Roth. Although the album 1984 only reached #13 on the charts, it contained the songs that are, to this day, instantly associated with Van Halen: Panama, Jump, I'll Wait, and Hot for the Teacher. All featured David Lee Roth.

pmsl they never had a number 1 til Dave left, they were probably more successful after Dave, not that I am a Sammy Hagar fan because i really am not, but i listen to the Sammy stuff too for Eddies playing.

Ya, Eddie Van Halen didn't really INVENT anything. And, besides, nobody listened to Van Halen after David Lee Roth left, so it wasn't Eddie's playing that captured and held public attention, it was Roth's vocals. In any event, Zappa was kicking ass when Eddie Van Halen was still shitting in his diaper.

Tapping is actually an old classical guitar technique. In rock music, the first guitarist i know of that did this before Zappa is Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett in 1971

Hum, seems to me that Frank is finger fretting in 1976 which could predate Mr. Van Halen

that's my experience!! The more people know about music, the better they rate FZ. And: his guitar soli are UNIQUE!! ALL other guitarists play more similar soli on different songs, eg Carlos S., whom I really like. Not to forget his abilities as composer, conductor and lyricist

I saw this when it first aired. Don't know how you got it, but he was on the Dinah Shore show once and she didn't seem amused by him. Although Peaches and Herb were on also and enjoye him.
