Uncreativejackass,
"Morality is subjective" is an objective claim about morality, but it's not an objective claim about the morality of a certain action.
Your argument would make sense if that person believed that there were no absolutes of any kind in reality and then said "Morality is subjective."
Also, one can express an opinion as an ethical relativist. Now whether that person believes his opinion is the ultimate truth is another thing.
Are you a religious person by any chance?
Got an email saying this is in response to something i posted :S
Not sure what i cant find my comment since youtube has jumbled the comment list.. again...
Zappa is totally right here, but that has nothing to do with ethical relativism. His own position makes it clear that he is an ethical absolutist, because he believes censorship is wrong.
Anyways, Zappa was intelligent, but he wasn't as good a debater as some here seem to think. He didn't really back up his position. He just flippantly repeated that censorship was bad and that there was no reason for it. The idiots around him just make him look like a goddamn genius by comparison.
A previous commenter said: "Morality is subjective."
Who gave that guy thumbs up? Ethical relativism is asinine.
-"Morality is subjective" is an OBJECTIVE claim about morality. You contradicted yourself.
-If morality was subjective, Lofton's crazy viewpoint would be just as valid as Zappa's, so you can't side with Frank(or condemn Lofton) while being an ethical relativist. In fact, you can't express an opinion at all.
-Two diametrically opposed concepts can't both be right.
shrewrepair: "How can someone be involved in DEMOCRACY if he believes that the universe is a monarchy?(alan watts)"
Well, even if we find out that the Orion Spur is actually ruled by the Grey Alien Emperor Jehovah, I don't think that would be reason to try to replicate that form of government on human societies...
AgentAJD: What being Conservative ment in 1986 was not the same as it is today. Being Conservative then ment being a Constitutionalist. Thats how much some things have changed. By todays standards Zappa would be Liberal.
"Conservatives: They're "pro-life" and for the death penalty"
Yep. They are for the life of innocent babies and death of murderers. Such a contradiction, huh?
Frank had a very strong mind most people wouldn't have been able to keep themselves from punching that guy. Then again notice how lofton calls frank childish insults by calling him an idiot and then threatens him by saying 'ill knock your teeth out' Shows that people with brains in their heads dont try to win a debate by threats of violence.
:O What are you trying to say~!? Is that sarcasm to our lovely neo cons?! -.-
I THINK YOU ARE ALSO AN ANARCHIST! if i had my way then people like you would be locked up and shot at for disagreeing with neo cons!!!!
XD
i love frank. i grew up listening to his music, and he was obviously a genius. but he using a strawman argument here. i agree w/ what he's saying, but he didn't have to keep reducing it to 'just words.'
Yeah, violencedefine666, I think Frank would have liked to slap that bloody Lofton, not just for what he said but the way he was shaking his hand around in Frank's space.
Yea, I totally agree with you wtw88, the way Frank was acting here, it's one of those situations where you hate the person you're talking to so much you just wanna call him some bad names and beat the fuck outta him, lol.
