Mr Roberts finds himself awoken inexplicably in a white room. A man sits before him at a desk and in between them stands a black button. If Mr Roberts pushes it, he will receive a briefcase filled with millions of dollars. Or he can take the key to the door and leave penniless. The catch? Pushing the button will result in the death of a human being. What would you do?
EDIT 1: Some people have observed a similarity in the premise of this film and an revival episode of The Twilight Zone in 1986. Please note (1) We had never seen the episode and only learnt of it long after we'd finished the film (2) The Twilight Zone weren't the first to do it. It's an old premise called the 'Faustian Bargain', around since the 16th century (deal with the 'devil') (3) Our film is similar in premise, but different in plot, characters, dialogue, aesthetics, setting, moral meaning, religious undertone, twist etc. And unless the Matrix has a copyright on the colour white, this film has nothing to do with the Matrix. The Twilight Zone, Star Trek, The Outer Limits, an obscure Roman Portugese writer etc, we are all using the SAME PREMISE. It's the Faustian Bargain and it's been around for centuries. Each version, including ours, aims to bring something new to an old idea. Please have the respect to not accuse us of plagiarism.
EDIT 2: Firstly, thanks YouTube for the feature! Secondly, thanks to all of you for watching and commenting! I'll just take the time to say that we have no particular religious affiliation; this is a fictional work and its ideas are designed to encourage thought and debate, not comment on any particular theology.
Our first professional short film. We made it for $200 and shot it on the stage of our old school in Melbourne, Australia. Fortunately, professional actor Robert Grubb agreed to act in it for free after reading the script. This film took nearly a year to put together, working on it in stages and creating the 'white' effect on a home PC. Please note that the younger actor, unlike Robert Grubb, has no formal acting training whatsoever.
The Making of "Black Button" is now on YouTube.
Two of our other shorts have been released on YouTube, 'Campsite' and 'The Window'. Click on our profile if you'd like to see them and subscribe for updates. Thanks!

"One Rat Short" is a work of love created by Charlex Films. It began as part of the effort to grow the company's CG department but eventually became much more than that. Originally, it was entitled "labratz" and as the title might suggest it mimicked the look and sensibility of worked already pioneered by other studios. As it evolved it took on a life of its own- it became my film- or as any director of an effort like this knows our film. We decided not to use anthropomorphic animation. We decided it would take place in two worlds- one so gritty, grimy and dark that the viewer needs to peer into the screen in order to make out the images- the other a sterile, white world so brightly lit that you feel the need to turn your head away from the screen. It was also important to me to keep the film looking as real as possible. One of the techniques we used was to give a lot of the camera work a hand-held feel and to keep it a little behind the action so that the scenes didn't seem staged. Lastly and most importantly I kept the story simple and tried to give it heart. One of my favorite short films, which I saw as a child was "The Red Balloon". I think the melancholic and innocent spirit of that film inhabits "One Rat Short."

10 minutes by Ahmed Imamovic. 1994. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Rome, Italy. How many different things can happen for only 10 Minutes. The film won the award for the best European short film in 2002.
This short film, as its title indicates lasts only 10 minutes, but it tells a much longer story which unravels only in our imagination upon seeing the end of the film. While 10 minutes in someone's life mean nothing, they can be fatal in another: a boy and his loving family, tragedy in a war-torn city, death and destruction. All in just ten minutes. The film follows two simultaneous story lines: one set in Rome, and one in Sarajevo, in 1994, the worst time of the war in Bosnia. Although the Rome part was not filmed on the original location, that does not take away anything from the quality of the film, it was just a symbolic element anyway. Cast is great, story is very compact and well written, direction dynamic and precise. There is nothing out of place in the film: well structured, stripped of false pathos, realistic, it is very straight forward. In other words, this is a jewel of a film, and it was not by chance that it won the award for the best European short film in 2002. 10 minutes for me is definitely one of the most moving and powerful films about wartime Sarajevo. Behind the scene: I read that the director Ahmed Imamovic, in search of Japanese for the role of the tourist, had to go to the Japanese Embassy in Sarajevo and ask one of the staff to perform in the film. Luckily for the director, the Embassy allowed one of their employees to star in the film.
The story tells how SERBS have killed civils, old people and children!

"Indymedia Presents" this week is a compilation of 5 short
pieces which ends with the comical "Discs of Fury"
question, "25,000 years of evolution leads
to this?"
The show starts with a short piece about the Mother's
March in Washington DC of parents who lost their
children in Iraq. It is set to "Michael's Gone to War"
the song by local indy composer, Brian Kinsella.
Filmed by Amy Flannary in Washington DC. Produced by
Patricia Boiko and Winning Pictures, LLC.
Then the show moves us with the award winning film,
"Everything Upside Down". In this short film,
courageous Jesuit University students from across the
country commemorate the lives of the priests, nuns and
local people slaughtered by trainees from the School
of the Americas located in Fort Benning, Georgia.
Seattle University students take us on their journey
from Seattle to Fort Benning in their heartfelt effort
to close down the terrorist training. The film was
produced by Phil Duncan and Erin Foran.
Next, is The Corporal's Boots another award winning
film. "Some people have taken it as an antiwar
statement; some people have taken it as a tribute and
memorial to our fallen heroes." Recalling the subtle
intensity of the Viet Nam memorial in Washington DC,
this story of one soldier's boots in the national
exhibit, "Eyes Wide Open", presents the inescapable
wartime reality of lives lost and families wounded. A
haunting, original score by local composer, Brian
Kinsella and the hammerlock of raw emotion create a
rare viewing experience. Produced by Patricia Boiko
and Winning Pictures, LLC.
The next film, "Zapped," transforms a doctor's heart
stopping ordeal into visual poetry. It combines
fireworks and human sacrifice into whimsical drama
about a serious medical problem: atrial fibrillation.
Set to the beat of the all-girl band, Smoosh, it is a
grand display of BBQ'd doctor flesh. Poetry by Karl
Weyrauch, MD used by permission from JAMA. Drums by
Chloe. Produced by Patricia Boiko and Winning
Pictures, LLC.
Last is the comical, rapid paced "25,000 Years of
Evolution Leads to This" with the musical performance
of the Seattle Indy Band, Discs of Fury. The editing
and artful of interspersion of footage from an East
Africa chimpanzee expedition makes this one of Russian
Documentary Filmmaker, Ester Schub's best work yet.

I am an atheist, and these are my favorite short atheistic quotations, set to nice uplifting trance music! (NOTE: quotes were gathered from the internet, they have not been verified by me, some are probably misquoted or taken out of context, etc.)
MORE GREAT QUOTES:
Since it is obviously inconceivable that all religions can be right, the most reasonable conclusion is that they are all wrong.
- Christopher Hitchens
I am as firmly convinced that religions do harm as I am that they are untrue.
- Bertrand Russell
You are a good person because you fear damnation. I am a good person without obligation.
- Guillermo Garcia
Morality is doing right, no matter what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, no matter what is right.
- Mencken
It is wrong always and everywhere for anyone to believe anything on insufficient evidence.
- William Clifford
I used to believe in god, until I reached the age of reason.
- George Carlin
If only god would give me some clear sign! Like making a large deposit in my name at a Swiss Bank.
- Woody Allen
Our god is vengeful! Oh spiteful one, show me who to smite and they shall be smoten.
- Homer Simpson
Dear lord: I present you this offering of cookies and milk. If you want me to eat them for you, give me no sign. Thy will be done.
- Homer Simpson
Blasphemy is a victimless crime.
- Unknown
god is dead!
- Friedrich Nietzsche
